report_problem Problem Statement

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is the fastest-growing structural building material, enabling mass timber buildings up to 25 stories that sequester carbon. However, CLT manufacturing relies on one-component polyurethane (1K PUR) adhesives derived from toxic methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). MDI is a potent respiratory sensitizer — once sensitized, even trace exposure can trigger fatal asthma attacks. Workers in CLT plants face chronic MDI exposure, and fire or machining of cured CLT releases isocyanate decomposition products.

trending_up Market Size

$1.6B global structural wood adhesives market (CLT segment growing 14% CAGR)

gavel Regulatory Drivers

OSHA PEL for MDI at 0.02 ppm ceiling. EU REACH Authorization required for diisocyanates in industrial use (effective August 2023, Regulation 2020/1149) — all workers handling diisocyanates must complete certified training. EN 16351 (CLT standard) specifies adhesive performance requirements. ANSI/APA PRG 320 (CLT Performance Standard) in North America. ICC-ES ESR reports for building code compliance. EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) and LCA requirements increasingly scrutinize adhesive embodied carbon.

No enterprise interest recorded yet. Companies can indicate their volume and urgency to help guide research priorities.

flag Success Criteria

Block shear strength above 6 MPa (dry) per EN 302-1, with wood failure above 70%. Wet shear strength above 4 MPa after 72hr cold water soak. Pass EN 391 delamination test (total delamination <5% for use class 1). Creep deformation under sustained load comparable to PUR adhesive controls. Open and closed assembly times compatible with industrial CLT manufacturing (minimum 30-minute open time).

precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed

Hydraulic cold press (minimum 1 MPa, 400mm platens) or laboratory hot press, SPF lumber (kiln-dried, 12% MC), soy protein isolate (food-grade), adhesive mixing equipment, table saw or precision specimen cutter, universal testing machine (100 kN capacity minimum for structural shear testing), vacuum-pressure delamination test apparatus (EN 391), water bath, analytical balance, moisture meter, calipers, specimen marking and cutting templates
