Corrugated Board Strength Enhancer
report_problem Problem Statement
Wet-strength resins used in corrugated packaging are predominantly polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) resins, which contain 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (1,3-DCP) and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) — both recognized carcinogens. These resins leach into food from corrugated shipping boxes for produce, frozen foods, and beverages. Additionally, PAE-treated paper is difficult to recycle because the wet-strength crosslinks resist repulping, contaminating recycled fiber streams.

gavel Regulatory Drivers
German BfR Recommendation XXXVI limits 1,3-DCP and 3-MCPD in wet-strength resins for food-contact paper. EU Framework Regulation 1935/2004 for food contact materials. FDA 21 CFR 176.170 for paper food contact substances. REACH SVHC candidate list includes epichlorohydrin. Recycled fiber content mandates in EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) revision incentivize recyclable wet-strength solutions. China GB 4806.8-2016 for food-contact paper.

flag Success Criteria
Wet tensile index above 10 Nm/g (minimum for functional wet-strength board) per TAPPI T456. Wet/dry tensile ratio above 15%. Dry tensile performance within 95% of PAE-resin treated control. Complete repulpability in 1% NaOH at 50C within 30 minutes. No detectable 1,3-DCP or 3-MCPD in treated paper.
precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed
TAPPI standard handsheet mold, laboratory beater (Valley beater or PFI mill), tensile testing machine, wet tensile testing apparatus (TAPPI T456 clamps), analytical balance, OCC pulp stock, hot press, drying rings or drum dryer, NaOH pellets, pH meter, graduated cylinders, micrometer for thickness measurement, specimen cutter
