report_problem Problem Statement

Fiberglass and mineral wool insulation — found in 90% of North American homes — uses phenol-formaldehyde (PF) binder resins to hold glass or mineral fibers together and maintain dimensional stability. During installation, cutting and handling insulation releases both respirable fibers and formaldehyde dust, exposing construction workers and DIY homeowners. Off-gassing continues for years in wall cavities, contributing to sick building syndrome. The insulation industry consumes over 500,000 tonnes of PF resin annually.

gavel Regulatory Drivers

US EPA TSCA formaldehyde emission guidelines for insulation products. CARB suggested control measure for fiberglass insulation. EU CPR (Construction Products Regulation) mandates Declaration of Performance including emissions. French VOC labeling (Decree 2011-321) rates products A+ to C for formaldehyde emissions. German AgBB evaluation scheme for VOC emissions from building products. LEED v4.1 EQ Credit: Low-Emitting Materials. WELL Building Standard Feature A06: VOC restrictions. GREENGUARD Gold certification.

flag Success Criteria

Bonded insulation mat recovers to minimum 95% of original thickness after 50% compression per ASTM C167. Tensile strength of bonded mat above 2 kPa (sufficient for handling and installation). Formaldehyde emission below detection limit per ASTM C1338. No visible binder degradation or color change after 7 days at 70C/90% RH aging. Achieves GREENGUARD Gold emission thresholds for formaldehyde (<9 ug/m3) and total VOCs (<220 ug/m3).

precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed

HVLP spray gun, air compressor, forced-air oven (up to 220C), spray booth or fume hood, unbonded glass fiber mat (or commercial insulation + acetone for binder removal), universal testing machine, compression test fixture, ASTM C1338 formaldehyde emission test apparatus (or small chamber method), P2 respirators, safety glasses, long-sleeve lab coat, analytical balance, thickness gauge, specimen cutting tools, acetone (if removing existing binder)
