report_problem Problem Statement

Particleboard is the most-produced wood composite globally at over 120 million cubic meters per year, used in flat-pack furniture, kitchen countertops, subflooring, and wall sheathing. Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins dominate, with UF used for interior and PF for moisture-resistant grades. While PF emits less formaldehyde than UF, phenol itself is highly toxic and the production process generates significant phenol-contaminated wastewater. Both resin types make recycling particleboard nearly impossible.

gavel Regulatory Drivers

US EPA TSCA Title VI limits particleboard formaldehyde to 0.09 ppm. CARB Phase 2 benchmark. EU E1 standard per EN 717-1. REACH restricts phenol as a CMR substance (Category 1B mutagen). OSHA PEL for phenol at 5 ppm TWA. EU Circular Economy Action Plan targets recyclability of wood composites. EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) schemes increasingly penalize non-recyclable composite wood products. IKEA, Steinhoff, and major retailers mandating NAF panels.

flag Success Criteria

Internal bond strength above 0.35 MPa per EN 319 (minimum for P2 grade particleboard per EN 312). MOR above 13 MPa, MOE above 1800 MPa per EN 310. Thickness swelling below 16% per EN 317. Screw withdrawal resistance above 600 N per EN 320. Formaldehyde emission below 0.05 ppm (NAF threshold). Target density 650-700 kg/m3.

precision_manufacturing Equipment Needed

Laboratory hot press (minimum 200C, 3 MPa), hammer mill or commercial wood particles, rotating drum blender with spray nozzle, forming box, universal testing machine, caliper/micrometer, analytical balance, moisture meter, formaldehyde emission chamber, dust extraction system, P2 respirators, hearing protection, specimen cutting equipment, screw withdrawal test fixture (EN 320)
